Kettering Health Network Cancer Center
Kettering Cancer Center is a new $49 million, 120,000 SF, five-story outpatient cancer center. Kleingers provided site civil engineering and landscape architectural services for the five-story Kettering Cancer Center, and accommodated owner requests to continue making changes even after construction had begun. Kleingers responded quickly, helping the owner avoid costly mistakes, by continuing to make real-time changes. For instance, to prevent delay Kleingers delivered the grading plan one week and the storm sewer design a week later.
The new building is the first building on the east side of Southern Boulevard and was designed around future buildings. This required Kleingers to extend the water main south along Southern Boulevard avoiding existing utilities including storm sewer and fiber optic lines to provide both domestic and fire service to the new building.
The new design for the campus included two new healing gardens to aid in the recovery of patients. The healing gardens were designed to stimulate the senses while providing a variety of calming and relaxing spaces for patients and doctors. Special attention was given to the placement of a wide variety of ornamental plantings. Plantings were strategically placed in highly visible locations to enhance views from the existing buildings on campus as well as the new cancer center.
Kleingers also provided 3D laser scanning for the project, helping determine the existing conditions of a building and underground parking garage in order allow for the design of a pedestrian bridge between the two structures.
