Civic Park, located at the corner of High Street and 2nd Street in downtown Hamilton, is in a highly visible location with high pedestrian volumes from nearby businesses. Looking to create an amenity for the community, The Kleingers Group designed a park with three tiers in order to work with the sites existing topography. Each tier is separated by curvilinear low landscape walls that provide space to host different program elements providing a wide range of activities for park users.
The top tier features a hardscape plaza with outdoor ping pong and corn hole as well as informal seating for outdoor dining or relaxation. The space is separated from the busy intersection by seat walls and landscape material to provide a visual and noise barrier. At the center of the space, is a round paver plaza with an intricate dissolving edge which creates a focal point, allowing the city to expand upon its outdoor art program. The middle tier provides green space for picnics as well as space to play chess. A life size art sculpture of a chess board provides visual interest and separates the spaces. The bottom tier consists of a flexible open green space with the future potential of a small dog park for nearby residents. A curvilinear paver walkway dissects all three tiers tying the spaces together while also defining pedestrian circulation for the park.
